Signing: Emily Pearson Signing “The Wilds” at Cape and Cowl on March 10

If you pay attention to the comics media you know Black Mask‘s newest title The Wilds is the critical darling of the month.

Writer Vita Ayala described the book to Geek.com:

…humanity was ravaged by a plague that killed half the population, and turned a number of the remainder into essentially flower zombies. Humanity, to survive, has formed these walled-off city-states like settlements. We follow Daisy Walker, who works for a specialized settlement called The Compound – which is basically a mashup of the USPS and Black Market. Daisy is a Runner, which means her job is to find salvage to bring back to the Compound, and also to ferry cargo (which can be goods, people, or just messages) between settlements. Being a Runner is a brutal job and few make it to retirement. Runners are basically exploited, but without them, society as it stands, could not work.

Thematically, the book is about how marginalized people (PoC, and especially WoC) are exploited. How PoC are expected to perform massive amounts of physical and emotional labor with no reward, and often until we are used up or die.

Artist Emily Pearson and colorist Marissa Louise work together to compellingly illustrate a world where the bleak reality of the end times can co-exist with the beauty of flowering undead.

If you live in the Bay Area you can talk to Pearson about her vision when she makes a stop on March 10 at Cape and Cowl Comics in Oakland. She’ll be at the 1601 Clay Street comic shop from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. both signing the first issue and creating sketches. Check out the Facebook event here.

The Wilds team includes lettering from Jim Campbell and editing by Danny Lore.

If you can’t make it to Cape and Cowl to pick up a copy and meet Pearson please check out our list of Bay Area Comic Book Stores. Most will likely have a copy unless, of course, the book is sold out.

Signing: Liam Sharp at Escapist on February 24

The Escapist Comic Book Store, 3090 Claremont Avenue, will host comic artist and writer Liam Sharp on Saturday, February 24. Sharp, who most recently came off a critically acclaimed run illustrating Wonder Woman with writer Greg Rucka (and alternating artistic duties with Nicola Scott) is embarking on a new journey with DC’s Amazonian. Sharp is both writing and illustrating a six-issue miniseries of The Brave and the Bold featuring Wonder Woman and Batman.

Liam SHarp Brave and the Bold

A new, six-issue miniseries written and illustrated by Liam Sharp (WONDER WOMAN)! When a Celtic god’s murder leads to a war between the fairy folk and a possible breach between worlds, Wonder Woman must find the murderer and keep the peace while Batman investigates strange occurrences in Gotham City. As Diana must turn to the World’s Greatest Detective for help, the two heroes quickly learn their cases may be connected.

Sharp will sign copies of issue one between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on February 24.

Bay Area Comic Events Update February 12, 2017

Ken Garing signing Planetoid Praxis at Escapist
When: February 18, 1 p.m.
Where: Escapist Comics
3090 Claremont Avenue
Berkeley, CA
What: San Francisco-based writer and artist Ken Garing returns to the Planetoid universe he created in 2012. Garing always intended for the first Planetoid mini-series to be a standalone title, but, as often happens to writers, the rich Universe he created had more stories to tell. Planetoid Praxis is the start of telling those stories.

Greg Rucka and Liam Sharpe signing Wonder Woman at Flying Colors
When: February 22, 5 p.m.
Where: Flying Colors
2980 Treat Avenue
Concord, CA
What: DC’s Wonder Woman was a bit of a confused mess prior to the company-wide Rebirth. Diana’s story had become muddled and uncertain. Greg Rucka, with the help of artists Liam Sharpe and Nicola Scott, was enlisted to untangle the lasso of truth behind her story. Rucka alternated between two Wonder Woman stories. Scott draws the issues exploring Wonder Woman’s first year discovering the “world of men” (Scott will leave the title after issue 14). Sharpe draws the modern Wonder Woman as she seeks to decode the last five years of her life. What was true and what was made up? That latter storyline, called “The Lies,” is collected in a new trade paperback dropping on February 22.  Rucka and Sharpe will join Flying Colors in Concord for a signing around the release.

March 2017

Bay Area Comic Events Update December 5, 2016

Annnndddd…we’re back! Apologies for the last two weeks of silence. Turkeys and all that. After stating in the last newsletter that things were slowing down in the Bay Area I’ve been proven a liar. December is hot with events including Warren Ellis, a discussion of the book She Changed Comics, a Wuvable Oaf party, a Mission MiniComix release event, and much more.

As the year draws to a close make sure you continue seducing the innocent by giving out comics and graphic novels as holiday presents. And please, shop locally! You can expect most (likely all) of our local comic shops will have sales this holiday season. Not sure what you should get for someone on your list? Trust in the knowledge of LCS staff to help fill the wishes of a difficult present receiver.

Before I get into the event list I want to take a moment for a little bit of housekeeping:
1) The Shared Universe is on Twitter! I don’t use the twitter account as often as I should because my personal twitter account has significantly more followers (6700 vs 59). However, from a branding perspective, I know I should be working on building that vertical and in 2017 will use it more often. Feel free to follow it if you’re the twittering sort: @ashareduniverse. You can also follow my personal account where I tweet about a whole host of things: @cometstarmoon

2) The Shared Universe is on Facebook! This will be useful if I pull the trigger on some local comics-related event ideas I’ve been considering. Consider becoming a fan if accumulating Facebook fan pages is your thing. No pressure.

3) I have a tinyletter! Right here! When you subscribe you’ll receive this post in your email on Monday mornings. I always send the tinyletter first so you’ll know all of this information two minutes before everyone else.

4) Finally, and most importantly, this weekly event round-up is only as good as my event investigation skills. If you know of a comics-related event comic up in the Bay Area please do feel free to drop me a line. I usually write these on Saturday mornings so consider Friday night the submission deadline. Email: theshareduniverse@gmail.com

Bay Area Comic Events Update October 17, 2016

This is a listing of Bay Area comic related events happening in the future. The biggest change for the list this week is I’ve expanded the scope of comic shops I’m covering from a 15-mile radius of where I live to a 25-mile radius from Cape and Cowl Comics (my closest LCS). This expansion and slight shift of the central point of the radius allows the addition of events at Concord’s Flying Color Comics and Benicia’s Zeppelin Comics. The distance restriction has always been for my personal sanity. When I started this website I was creating individual posts for events and that required a great deal more writing than this simple listing. By boiling it down to this weekly list (with occasional posts calling out specific events) I can capture a larger footprint of comic goodness. If you want to receive this list in your email box every Monday please join the rest of the cool kids and put your address in the box below. If you see an event you think should be on this list drop me an email: theshareduniverse@gmail.com

This past weekend  saw Monstress co-creator Marjorie Liu in Berkeley with official visits to Fantastic Comics and Trickster plus a surprise visit to Escapist. You can see some photos of her visits at those links. If you haven’t checked out Monstress the first volume is now available. Those stores above likely have signed copies if you’re into that sort of thing. Even with three years left to go I can confidently say this title will be on my end-of-decade top 10.

The big Bay Area visit this week will be when Box Brown comes to town. Box Brown is an Ignatz award winner for his 2011 anthology Ben Died of a Train and in 2014 his biography of Andre the Giant landed on the New York Times bestseller list. He’s in the Bay Area this week for the launch of his new graphic novel Tetris: The Games People Play.

In a bit of tangentially comic related event news, the Bay Area Opera Collaborative is presenting a production of Pagliacci. They’re taking this classic opera and infusing it with 1980s superhero flair. You can likely guess how they’ll portray the clown. Fun trivia: In the fifth episode of 1966’s Batman, the dynamic duo track the Joker to the opera house where the Gotham City Opera Company is performing Pagliacci. You have three more chances to catch this production: October 21-23. Tickets here.

Bay Area Comic Events Update October 10, 2016

I’ve started a tinyletter! You can now receive this list in your email box so you never need to visit this website again. In a perfect world, this updated event listing will go out every Monday, but this is an imperfect world so it’ll on occasion not arrive on a Monday. What else can you find in The Shared Universe’s tinyletter? I don’t know. It’s an evolving idea. When relevant I’ll likely add Bay Area comic news (stuff like this) and possibly non-Bay Area comic news I find interesting. I only make two promises: to do my best to capture every upcoming event and only send out one tinyletter per week. Before we get to the event list you can sign up by popping your email address in the box below:

Bay Area Comics Signing and Reception: The Art of Mike Mignola at Trickster

hellboy_in_hell_5In November of 1981, The Comic Reader issue number 196 hit shelves. The cover featured three of the most iconic heroes from some of the most memorable stories of the early part of the Golden Age: The Spirit, Doc Savage, and Dominic Fortune. It was the first published cover of Mike Mignola who would go on to create some of the most memorable creator-owned stories in modern comics: Hellboy, Baltimore, BPRD, The Amazing Screw-On Head, and more.

On October 8, Tr!ckster, 2631 Ashby Avenue in Berkeley, will celebrate the art of Mike Mignola with a reception and signing. In addition to acting as a release party for Mignola’s Helboy in Hell, the final chapter in Hellboy’s two-decades-long story, the event also marks the fourth year anniversary of the Eisner-winning comic book boutique.

Tr!ckster will showcase Mignola’s art, provide BPRD artifacts courtesy of Skeleton Crew Studios, and make available a limited edition Mignola print.

The event starts at 6 p.m.

East Bay Comics Trail Signing: Ted Naifeh at Trickster & Fantastic (9/17)

The most recent project from Princess Ugg creator Ted Naifeh takes the superhero genre and mashes it up with a medieval fantasy world. Night Dominion is a slight break for Naifeh who’s earned a hefty stack of Harvey’s and Emmy’s creating young adult comics with strong female protagonists. Naifeh told the AV Club the title is more mature than some of his previous work but it still has a strong female character at the head. “It’s been nice to not worry about whether my main character looks cute,” he said, “I want her harsh and formidable, like her world.”

Naifeh, who’s based in the Bay Area, is hosting a dual launch party along the Berkeley segment of the East Bay Comics Trail. He’ll start off with a 4 p.m. signing at Fantastic Comics at 2026 Shattuck Avenue. After the signing, he’ll head across town to Trickster, 2631 Ashby Avenue, for a 7 p.m. reception and art show.
